WRCA Event Rules


The WRCA-sanctioned Stout Ranch Rodeo will take place at Somervell County Expo Center on April 12th & 13th, 2024. Rules and the entry form are located below. Questions? Call Ketch Weaver at (903) 388-9851. BOOKS ARE OPEN FOR 2024.

Rules:

Team Sorting:

  • 4 or 5 team members horseback. Any combination of team members may cross the line, but only one cutter in the herd at a time. Herd will consist of numbered cattle, zero (0) to nine (9). A numbered yearling will be called and time will start when the judge drops his flag. 3 head will be sorted in numerical order, there must be daylight between each yearling. Any incorrectly numbered cattle that cross the line will result in a no time. Any correctly sorted cattle that return back across the line will also result in a no time. Time will end when the 3rd yearling crosses the line and the judge drops his flag. No loping IN the herd (15-second penalty for each occurrence). 2-minute time limit.

Ranch Bronc Riding:

  • A standard working saddle must be used, no P.R.C.A. rigging allowed, no night-latches. No sharp spurs. A regular bucking horse halter must be used. Saddles and spurs will be inspected.

Maverick Branding:

  • 4 or 5 team members horseback. Any team member may cross the line, but no more than one member can be in the herd at any given time. Herd will consist of numbered cattle, zero (0) to nine (9) plus blanks. A numbered yearling will be called and time will start when the judge drops his flag. Cutter cuts numbered calf from herd prior to heading and heeling. All incorrectly numbered calves must be returned to herd prior to roping. The line is dead once the correctly numbered yearling is cut cleanly from the herd. One front leg is allowed in the head loop, heading and heeling are mandatory. There is a 4-loop limit, no rebuilding. The yearlin must be standing to be heeled. The yearling must be running loose (may be trailing a rope) prior to being headed. The yearling must be flat on its side when the animal is branded. Time stops when the brand is returned to the bucket and all ropes are off. Brand must be returned on foot. No loping IN the herd (15-second penalty).

Stray Gathering:

  • 4 or 5 team members horseback. Two yearlins will be let out at the opposite end of the arena. Team members may pursue the cattle once the flag is dropped. Team will be allowed 3 loops per animal to head and heel each yearling. One front leg is allowed in the head loop. The yearling must be running loose prior to being headed. The yearlin must standing when heeled. Time stops when both yearlings are tied down and team calls for time. 3 legs must stay tied for 6 seconds.

Wild Cow Milking:

  • 4 or 5 team members horseback. Team will pursue cow when flag is dropped. The cow’s head or horns must pass through the loop. There will be a two-loop limit with no intentional tripping. Dally only, and the roper can stay dallied while the cow is being milked. No driving the cow after she is roped (15-second penalty). The cow must be standing to be milked. Time stops when the milk and the rope are in the circle. If the milk will not pour in 6 seconds, the team receives a no time.

Top Hand & Top Horse Awards

The judges for Top Hand / Top Horse will watch the events and choose one horse and one cowboy they believe exhibits outstanding skills and judgment. The same person or the same horse cannot win the Top Hand and Top Horse awards for two consecutive years.

Top Hand cannot receive points from a team event in which he/she did not participate.
